Dr. Fujimoto is a professor at the Faculty of Policy Studies, Nanzan University in Nagoya, central Japan. He has studied mangrove ecosystems for over 30 years, especially from the perspective of the effects of sea-level rise and carbon sequestration, in the Asia-Pacific regions. In particular, he and his team have established permanent plots and conducted long-term monitoring studies on Iriomote Island in southwestern Japan and Pohnpei Island in Micronesia since the early 1990s when he belonged to the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. He is also the representative of the mangrove reforestation NGO Nanyu no Kai (Hoi Nam Du).
